DOC Conservation Week 2015

This Conservation Week (November 1-8) DOC is encouraging New Zealanders to get out and connect with nature

Conservation Week 2015

This Conservation Week (November 1-8) DOC is encouraging New Zealanders to get out, connect with nature and discover how it enhances their health and wellbeing.

DOC will be running community events right across the country to highlight local places and projects. These events will all be listed on www.conservationweek.org.

Take a look at what is on your area, and take a friend along to experience something new.

This year DOC has introduced a national Geocaching competition. Get exploring your local area, look for hidden caches placed specially for Conservation Week and win great prizes from Air New Zealand and Macpac. Geocaching is a modern day version of hide-and-seek using a free App for your mobile phone to find ‘caches’ (containers) in the great outdoors. Popular with both children and adults it’s a great way to discover places that are new to you.

Back again this year is the Find a Whio competition, which is a virtual hunt to find a whio. Designed for children, it’s something that everyone can enjoy – and there is an amazing whio adventure up for grabs.

Conservation Week – Discover the world where you live

Conservation Week is about getting out and about to explore your local treasures and special places. These might be tracks, forests, marine reserves, parks, camp grounds that can often be found right on your doorstep.

It is a great opportunity to engage your staff and customers and help celebrate Conservation Week.

You could support and get involved in a number of ways, from attending Conservation Week activity or event to promoting Conservation Week through your own website and social media pages.

Conservation Week is Department Of Conservation’s annual national campaign to generate a connection between New Zealanders and conservation values. It provides DOC with an opportunity to spread conservation message, connect and engage with new audience.

We would be delighted to have you involved.

Check out Conservationweek.org.nz for more information or email conservationweek@doc.govt.nz.

Our featured BACS partner is the Department of Conservation

New Zealand’s natural environment underpins our lives and lifestyles. It is unique in the world and treasured by New Zealanders, but it is also fundamental to our prosperity.

Our economy, health and wellbeing, leisure pursuits and national identity all depend on our natural environment. We depend on natural resources like clean water, fertile soils and healthy ocean fisheries; we also depend on the natural services nature provides like protection from flooding and erosion.

As New Zealanders our cultural identity is also closely tied to our natural environment. It is part of what makes us who we are.

Given its huge economic, social and cultural importance, we can’t afford to take our environment for granted. Every New Zealander has a stake in nature and has a role to play in protecting it.

Kaipatiki

A beauty queen planting trees in Birkdale….. ?

Well that’s what’s happening for Kaipatiki Project’s conservation week community planting day.

Nicole Fairbrother, Miss Earth New Zealand 2013 will be planting with us.

Hopefully Theo and Lawrence who enjoyed tidying up after looking for “spaghetti” in the soil at our last community planting day will be there again too.  They made a great team.  Come and join us on Saturday 7th September from 9.30am.  Meet at the electricity substation next to 84 Eskdale Road.

We are famed for our organic sausage sizzle afterwards.  Don’t forget your spade and gloves!

Go on, go now, and make your pledge for Conservation Week! You may even win a great prize

Here’s the exciting conservation campaign and competition with great prizes on offer.

Turere Lodge

As part of the Department of Conservation (DOC) and BACS partnership, we want to encourage all BACS members to get involved in conservation and tell us how your organisation will be celebrating Conservation Week this year.

Celebrate Conservation Week: What’s Your Organisation Doing?  Make your pledge.

Conservation Week (8th – 15th September) is New Zealand’s premier conservation event. Conservation week has been running for over 30 years and is an opportunity to learn about the many fantastic ways that people can get involved.  The Department of Conservation (DOC) plays a role in orchestrating Conservation Week however, the campaign’s character and strength comes from the wide range of individuals, community groups and businesses that participate and showcase their efforts to protect New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna.

The theme for the 2013 Conservation Week Campaign is “Celebrate Conservation Week: What’s your Whānau doing?”.  During the week, the campaign aims to raise awareness, among all groups of people of simple ways they can get involved and participate in conservation.

We encourage all BACS members to go online at www.conservationweek.org.nz and choose a conservation themed activity to participate in.  These could be anything from planting a native tree in your workplace, changing your Facebook cover image, joining a volunteer group for a day, going out for a team walk or fundraising for a conservation charity.

Go on, go now, and make your pledge for Conservation Week!

Competition

To celebrate Conservation Week and the people who make up your organisation, we have a number of prizes to give away.

There are two prizes of a mid-week stay (1 night) for your group (up to 32 people) at Turere Lodge, located in the beautiful setting of the Catchpool Valley in the Rimutaka Forest Park (40 minutes drive from Wellington, and a 2 hour easy walk).

We also have a campsite experience for four people for 2 nights, staying at a beautiful place of your choice anywhere in NZ.  (Subject to terms and conditions.)

We also have a variety of spot prizes waiting to be given away.

Please tell us, in less than 300 words, why a mid-week over-night retreat into the forest for a large group of people is valuable for your organisation?  If you won this prize, who would you share this experience with and why?  If you have multiple departments/offices you are welcome to submit from each one.
