A snippet: ‘News from the far North.’

Ākina was back in the Far North this month, continuing their good work to support budding social entrepreneurs through the Thrive programme.  This time the two-day workshop was in Kaitaia, with previous workshops held in Kerikeri and Rawene.

Plans are underway for an Expo highlighting the teams’ achievements over the four-month development programme, scheduled for Friday 21 August in Kerikeri.  Please let us know if you’d like to attend and learn about their ideas first-hand.

Measurement the key to healthy corporate-community partnerships

In my experience working with corporate-community partnerships, one of the key benefits of building measurement into the relationship is the ability to have an earnest discussion that goes deeper than the vision of the partnership, to encompass measurable objectives that can be tracked and assessed over time.

By Jessica Pattison.

It sounds straight-forward, however it’s a vital step that is often overlooked.

Last year I facilitated a number of workshops for LBG member companies and their community partners to discuss how best to measure the social impact of their partnerships.

During the workshops I used LBG’s social impact methodology to take each partnership through a process of clarifying their strategic intent and mapping their intended impact. This led to a clear plan for measuring and reporting the outcomes achieved. Read more

Exciting Akina Launchpad programme is well underway

The Launchpad programme is well underway, with all eleven teams working hard on their first ‘sprint’ before the next workshop in early November.

Our first workshop in early October brought the teams and their support teams, each of which are led by a staff member from Contact Energy, together in Auckland for two days.

The teams are focused on clarifying their initial business model and identifying the risks and assumptions that need to be tested.

Find out more about the teams here.

Akina workshops starting in September

We’re gearing up for another round of workshops and clinics across the country, and will be introducing some new session formats to help us meet demand.

We’ve appointed Emily Preston to coordinate some of our programmes, and we’ll be rolling out some new registration forms and events over the coming weeks.

We’re also working on a plan for how we can work more effectively around the country in partnership with local organisations, funders and community groups. Watch this space.

Our next workshop will be in Nelson, on Wednesday 10 September. You can find out more about the workshop at our website.

Bold action: Akina raising awareness and building capability for social enterprises

We’re expanding our mission and stepping up our activity across Aotearoa New Zealand, building on the energy of everyone who has been involved with the Hikurangi Foundation since 2008.

The Akina Team

One of the most obvious changes you’ll see from today is our new name – the Ākina Foundation. We’re changing our name to help us describe the next chapter of our story.

We wanted to adopt a new name that helps us better demonstrate our evolving approach and increased capacity to support New Zealand’s emerging social enterprise sector.

Ākina is a Māori word used as a call for bold action. It also conveys a spirit of watchful and active encouragement, helping others to identify pathways through their challenges.

Our mission is to develop the emerging New Zealand social enterprise sector by:

  • Activating talent, raising awareness and building capability for social enterprise.
  • Supporting high-potential social enterprises to deliver scalable solutions to pressing social and environmental challenges.
  • Facilitating new market and investment opportunities for social enterprise.

The people that work for and support Ākina are committed to growing social enterprise in New Zealand.
